In San Francisco’s Mission District, Brava Theater Center is a renovated 1920s space with a long history that stretches back nearly a century. In 1926, it started out as a vaudeville venue called the Roosevelt Theatre, which later became a cinema. Its architecture blends Spanish Colonian Revival and Moorish influences with Art Deco touches, giving it a distinctive presence along the Mission’s 24th Street corridor.
Brava’s stage is preparing to host another chapter—a Candlelight tribute to ‘The Lord of the Rings’. This upcoming concert features a string quartet performing the films’ enduring scores live, for an evening where history, music, and nostalgia meet.

A theater with countless stories in its walls
Having taken on many purposes and identities over the years, the venue has gathered its fair share of stories. When the building was renovated and a 360-seat theater with additional community spaces were installed in 1996, workers uncovered a 1937 bas-relief depicting an airplane flying over an unusually open San Francisco skyline, old film posters and even a horseshoe buried beneath the floor.
Over the years, this historic San Francisco space has hosted incredible performers like Sandra Bernhard, Astrid Hadad, Lesley Gore, and Ely Guerra, always centering women, LGBTQIA+ artists, and underrepresented voices.

The soundtrack from ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy performed live
Brava Theater Center sets the stage for Candlelight’s tribute to ‘The Lord of the Rings’ held inside the venue’s historic auditorium. This collaboration between Candlelight and Warner Bros. Discovery Global is the best way to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary, giving audiences a chance to experience familiar scores like “The Fellowship” and “The One Ring” in an intimate setting.
