The Bay Bridge connecting San Francisco and Oakland is an essential part of Bay Area infrastructure, and it carries over 30% of all traffic on the state-owned bridges combined. This week, the California Highway Patrol released a statement informing the public that drivers crossing the Bay Bridge can expect strict enforcement regarding proper lane use for the westbound carpool lane. While no laws have been changed on the bridge, it’s important to know when and under what conditions drivers can use the carpool/bus lane. Here’s what to know.
Bay Bridge carpool lane enforcement
On September 9, the California Highway Patrol announced it would resume strictly enforcing bus/carpool lane laws and vehicle types on the bridge.
The carpool and bus lane is on the far right of the bridge into San Francisco. Buses, motorcycles, or cars with 3 or more people are allowed to use the lane between 5 am and 10 am and 3 pm and 7 pm, Monday through Friday. Buses can always use the lane, regardless of the day or time. The fine for violators using the lane outside of the proper hours could reach $490 or more. The carpool and bus lane is accessible from Interstate 80, Interstate 880 or West Grand Avenue.
The announcement comes from the CHP, Caltrans, and the Bay Area Toll Authority. Law enforcement expects that the new focus on enforcing the lane’s restrictions will help keep it clear for its intended use. Carpools are allowed in the bus lane only during peak periods on weekdays in order to ease traffic on the busy bridge.
