The California Academy of Sciences is known for its intriguing, family-friendly science exhibits, and it is home to an aquarium, rainforest exhibit, and natural history museum. The museum is a popular destination for San Francisco locals and tourists alike, and this week it is celebrating its 173rd anniversary.
The science museum will celebrate its anniversary with Academy Day on Thursday, March 26. Tickets will be available at a “pay what you can” basis, where you can buy a ticket starting at $5. Of course, if you want to support the museum, you can pay more for your ticket on Thursday.

Academy Day programing
Along with the affordable tickets, the academy will also have a series of exciting programming. You can look forward to live jazz music at the museum’s main entrance and even meet and greet with the Golden State Valkyries mascot.
Look out for the Science Fair in the East Garden created by academy scientists from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can also expect a photo booth, face painting, and even giveaways at the planetarium. You can learn fun facts about dinosaurs from Dr. Scott, the Executive Director of the Academy. Plus, the academy will host an animal meet-and-greet featuring raptors, snakes, lizards, and more. Finally, you can check out a lecture on California native wildlife at 1 p.m. in the East Garden.
The science museum will also host a silent auction to raise money, with various items available for bidding online and in person until 4 pm on March 26.
About the California Academy of Sciences
The Academy was first founded in 1853 (only a few years after California became a state), originally opening on Market Street. The museum eventually moved to Golden Gate Park, where it still is today. The museum has many fascinating exhibitions, including an indoor rainforest, filled with plants and animals, including beautiful tropical butterflies. The planetarium is another popular section of the museum, along with the extensive natural history exhibits.
