While Amtrak operates scenic train journeys all over the United States, travelers widely agree that the California Zephyr between Emeryville and Chicago is the most beautiful route available. The 2,438-mile journey is also the longest passenger train route in the United States, covering two-thirds of the country in about 52 hours.
San Francisco travelers can hop an Amtrak Thruway bus running straight to the Emeryville station across the bay, where the California Zephyr takes off once daily. In three days and two nights, you’ll pass through the Sierra Nevada, the Rocky Mountains, the Bonneville Salt Flats, Nebraska’s prairies, and more.
Here’s a closer look…

Key stops and scenery aboard the California Zephyr
Amtrak’s California Zephyr takes travelers through major cities including Sacramento, Reno, Salt Lake City, Denver, and Omaha.
Soon after leaving the bay, watch out for spectacular scenery through the Sierra Nevada and Donner Pass, especially over Donner Lake. The route proceeds through dramatic sections of the Rocky Mountains, including the canyons of the Colorado River valley.
In Utah and Nevada, views open up over vast landscapes including the Bonnevillle Salt Flats and the Humboldt River Valley, before crossing into expansive Nebraska prairies. The train crosses the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers and traverses the rolling hills of Iowa before arriving in Chicago.

Traveling with the Zephyr
The California Zephyr uses Amtrak’s double-decker Superliner cars, which have both coach seating and sleeping accommodations. There’s also a dining car and a popular observation car with panoramic windows where guests gather to watch the scenery through the Rockies and the Sierras.
You can visit the official Amtrak website to book a trip aboard the popular train route with your choice of coach seating, a small private roomette, or a larger bedroom. Early booking can turn out affordable one-way coach tickets costing between $150 and $250, but meals are not included. If you opt for a sleeper accommodation, one-way prices start around $600 with meals.
Next time you’re looking at flights, consider instead checking out the California Zephyr route for a more relaxed and beautiful alternative that takes you through some of the most memorable natural landscapes in North America.
