Join the Autumn Moon Celebration at an all-day event in San Francisco’s Union Square. This free, family-friendly event will be held on Saturday, September 10th, and will feature live music, dancing, a calligraphy demonstration, martial arts, and other exciting performances. The event will also feature food and crafts from a variety of popular vendors.
The Autumn Moon Celebration honors an important and popular festival in China and across several other countries in Asia. The celebration is held to honor the moon and thank it for the season’s harvest. Just as the moon controls the tides, many cultures believe that the moon has an effect on the flow of all water and thus our ability to grow food. The Autumn Moon Celebration is also a time of family togetherness and reunion, which has been compared to American Thanksgiving. The festival is always held on a full moon, which is also known as the harvest moon.
A highlight of the celebration is the Hanfu walk show. Hanfu are traditional styles of Chinese clothing and the show will feature costumes from the Wei Jin, Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties. “The clothing of each dynasty is full of its own cultural characteristics, and also reflects the inheritance and development of Chinese culture and history. Hanfu is an important part of traditional Chinese culture,” according to the festival website.
You can also look forward to a performance from Enjoy Dance Studio (EDS), the largest Asian-owned dance studio in the Bay Area. EDS teaches classes ranging from Jazz to TikTok and even Hiphop-inspired choreography, so we’re sure to see an exciting performance from this group.
