San Francisco’s Legion of Honor just announced a major new fashion exhibition opening this year, and if past SF fashion exhibitions are any indication, it’s shaping up to be a hit.
Azzedine Alaïa: Sculpting Fashion is the first major United States retrospective dedicated to the late designer’s work. The exhibition is scheduled to open on November 21, 2026 and run through April 11, 2027.
The showcase spans both the special-exhibition galleries on the museum’s lower level and select first-floor galleries where Alaïa’s designs will be presented alongside works from the permanent collection.
Alaïa, who was born in Tunisia in 1935 and died in 2017, reshaped fashion during the 1980s and 1990s by designing body-conscious garments that emphasized the natural curves of women’s bodies — a deliberate departure from the baggy, voluminous silhouettes dominant at the time.

The retrospective will feature 80 garments drawn from across Alaïa’s career, as well as pieces from his personal collection of historical haute couture — shown together for the first time in the U.S. — from which he drew technical and aesthetic inspiration. Among the highlights are designs worn by Tina Turner, Grace Jones, Rihanna, and First Lady Michelle Obama.
Thematic sections in the lower-level galleries examine specific aspects of his craft: bandage dresses, sculptural shapes and silhouettes, suiting, his signature use of black and white, and construction techniques including raised work, mousseline, pearls, velours, and zippers. A dedicated gallery will focus on his role as a collector of historical high fashion and haute couture.
