Halloween is just a few weeks away, and now is the perfect time to watch a scary movie. Whether you’re a major horror fan or just looking to get into the Halloween spirit, one San Francisco theater has a calendar packed with classic horror films, from the campy Rocky Horror Picture Show to the classic 1968 movie Night of the Living Dead.
Halloween at Balboa Theater
The theater will have a mix of new releases and classic movies playing throughout the month. On October 17, the theater will host the International Vampire Fest, with a lineup of iconic vampire movies from various countries, including El Vampiro (1957), Let the Right One In (2008), Planet of the Vampires (1965), and more. The day features 7 movies between 11:30 am and 10:30 pm, and you can either buy individual tickets to movies or a full day pass for $30.
Another highlight this October is a screening of Teen Witch, accompanied by a live drag show on Wednesday, October 21. Other iconic horror movies on the schedule include Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, The Exorcist, and Night of the Living Dead. The theater will also continue its tradition of screening The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween night, at both 7 pm and 11 pm. The screenings include a shadow cast performing and are a popular, lively tradition.
The theater will also host a Halloween Mystery Marathon on October 31, featuring four films picked by programmers. The horror films won’t be revealed until they are played, and the event runs from 4:30 to 9:15 pm, when the last movie starts. The marathon will have an intermission with a festive costume contest and plenty of candy. The movie marathon only costs $13 for the night, and we recommend getting tickets soon.
