Ryan Coogler’s latest film, Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, premiered in April 2025 to massive success. The film was both highly rated by critics and beloved by fans, and earned over $350 million in the process. Now, as award season is in full swing, the movie broke an Oscars record, receiving a staggering 16 nominations, surpassing the previous record of 14. Notable nominations include Best Picture, Directing, Original Screenplay, and more. The actors in Sinners were also well represented across the nominations, with Michael B Jordan nominated for Lead Actor, Delroy Lindo as Supporting Actor, and Wunmi Mosaku as Supporting Actress.
Coogler directed, wrote, and produced the horror film, although this is far from his first success. He also directed Creed and major Marvel films like Black Panther before making Sinners. Coogler was born in Oakland before moving to Richmond as a child. He attended college in the Bay Area and Sacramento before earning his master’s at the University of Southern California. Coogler noted seeing his first movies at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland, which screened Sinners in 70mm this spring. The theater was one of only five in the country to show the film in 70mm 5-perf projection, a favorite among film enthusiasts.
