50 Top Pizza recently released its comprehensive list of the 50 best pizzerias in the United States, and you’d better believe that SF made an appearance! Beloved local restaurant Tony’s Pizzeria Napoletana came in at #4 on the list. Two other SF pizzerias also ranked in the top 50 — they are the Marina’s A16 at #33 and the Mission’s Yellow Moto Pizzeria at #49.
Tony’s Pizzeria Napoletana owner Tony Gemignani also nabbed the Performance of the Year 2023 – Robo Award for having two pizzerias ranking in the top 50. Tony’s sister restaurant Pizza Rock in Las Vegas came in at #18.
Gemignani can add this award to a formidable list of other accolades — not only is he a 13-time World Pizza Champion, but he was also the first American and non-Neapolitan to win Best Pizza Romana at the 2011 World Championship of Pizza Makers in Naples.
Locals swear by the North Beach institution that is Tony’s. The massively famous pizzeria features dozens of diverse pizzas in different styles, ranging from Sicilian to classic American to coal-fired. The state-of-the-art restaurant has seven different pizza ovens and a full bar with Italian and Californian wines, and the menu incorporates fresh herbs and honey from the restaurant’s rooftop garden.
As for the other SF pizzerias that made the top 50, you’ll want to stop by #33 A16 in the Marina for mouthwatering pizzas straight out of Southern Italy; and #48 Yellow Moto Pizzeria in the Mission for thin-crust Neapolitan pizzas with a Californian twist.
50 Top Pizza’s list was topped by New York’s Una Pizza Napoletana at #1, Jersey City’s Razza Pizza Artigianale at #2, and Portland’s Ken’s Artisan Pizza at #3. The first 15 positions on the list can now enter the 100 Best Pizzerias in the World ranking, which will hold an awards ceremony at the Palazzo Reale in Naples on Sept. 13.
