About the Golden Gate Park Band
The Golden Gate Park Band started in 1882 with 12 members, and the first bandshell in the park was built in 1883. The growing popularity of the concerts prompted the park to build a larger bandshell in 1886. Finally, in 1900, the bandshell that still stands today was built, called the Temple of Music. The stage was donated by Claus Spreckels, and it is often called the Spreckles Temple of Music.
The Bandshell will also host multiple free concerts every week, organized by local nonprofit Illuminate. You can expect regular concerts on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, featuring local artists playing a variety of music in addition to the Golden Gate Park Band’s Sunday performances.
