The California Department of Motor Vehicles introduced a redesigned driver’s license and identification card on October 1, 2025.
This marks the first significant update since 2018, when the REAL ID star was added to the upper right corner.

New design as of Oct. 1, 2025
The DMV shared the sample image below of the updated card design, which now displays “CALIFORNIA” in all capital letters, along with artwork featuring redwood trees and California poppies.

The previous version, introduced in 2018 with the rollout of the REAL ID, included an outline of the state, sailboats, and a forty-niner panning for gold.
Before that, a redesigned card with new security features was first introduced in 2010.
“The new cards use next generation technology to enhance security and with a design that shows California’s iconic redwoods, poppies and coastline,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon. “While I know some of our customers will want the new version of the driver’s license, there is no need to replace an existing license or identification card until your current one expires.”
New security features
The updated card features improved anti-counterfeiting and security measures.
Among the changes is a new digital security signature embedded in one of the barcodes on the back, making California one of the first states to implement this technology. The magnetic strip previously found on the back of the card has been removed.
Renewing your California driver’s license
The DMV advises beginning the renewal process online before visiting an office in person. According to the latest information on the DMV’s website, licenses can be renewed within 90 days of their expiration date.
Fees remain unchanged at $45 for a driver’s license and $39 for an identification card.
