Picture this: it’s March 28, 1965. Just three days earlier, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps of the Alabama State Capitol and addressed 25,000 people at the end of the Selma to Montgomery march, a moment that would help push the Voting Rights Act into law. He barely had time to rest before he was en route to San Francisco.
His destination? Grace Cathedral, perched high atop Nob Hill.
Dr. King’s sermon at Grace Cathedral
Grace Cathedral’s soaring structure had only just been completed, and Dr. King was selected as the very first major voice to fill the brand-new space.
Invited by Bishop James Pike, Dr. King preached a sermon called “The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life.” While built to hold a crowd, the cathedral still couldn’t contain everyone who showed up. An estimated 5,000 people packed the pews, the aisles, and the back rows of the choir, spilling out the doors and into the streets of Nob Hill.
Inside that packed, freshly finished cathedral, Dr. King delivered one of the lines he’d become best known for:
“All life is interrelated. And we are caught in an inescapable web of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects us all indirectly.”
The very next morning, still in San Francisco, Dr. King appeared on NBC’s Meet the Press. During this broadcast, he announced his plans to push for an economic boycott of Alabama-made goods, keeping the momentum from Selma alive.
It’s amazing to think that one of the most consequential weeks in American civil rights history included a stop inside San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral. To this day, Dr. King’s sermon remains one of the most monumental and transformative events in the cathedral’s history.
After 61 years, the same cathedral is still glowing
Grace Cathedral is very much an active space, and these days, part of what draws people through its doors is AURA, an immersive light-and-sound installation.
