This September, a free performance of one of Shakespeare’s most iconic plays will come to SF parks. The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival will once again be hosting Shakespeare in the Park, a series of free performances in McClaren Park, and they’ve even added a second SF park to the calendar.
This year’s play is The Tempest, a classic Shakespeare comedy written in 1623, complete with people adrift at sea, an island full of magical creatures, and shipwrecked sailors. The program is in its 42nd year of performances and is the fourth presentation of The Tempest.
“Bringing the magic of live professional theater and the beauty of Shakespeare’s
language to life in a communal park setting is what the Festival is all about.” Said Executive Director Toby Leavitt in a statement. ” We strive to eliminate barriers to participation in the cultural arts as much as we possibly can. Free Shakespeare in the Park is truly a ‘come as you are’ event!”
The group has been performing at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater for over ten years and now has announced another series of shows at the Sue Bierman Park. The park is located downtown, near the SF Ferry building. The new venue will add four more shows to the schedule, including a preview and opening night at the downtown SF park. The shows are scheduled between August 31 and September 22, so you have plenty of time to see the lively performance.
