Grace Cathedral is bustling with events, including plenty of non-denominational programs and installations such as the popular yoga classes. One of the historic cathedral’s most popular installations, Grace Light, is returning this fall.
The stunning light installation creates an immersive light experience accompanied by a beautiful score. A bright light glows down from the towering cathedral ceiling, falling on the labyrinth. Only 60 people are allowed per viewing to limit crowding and keep the immersive and peaceful nature of the experience.
A 100-foot-tall shaft of light is projected down onto visitors, who are surrounded by a darkened cathedral. The result is a stunning installation that frequently sells out. Guests have 35 minutes to enjoy the experience on the labyrinth.
The beautiful display returns this fall; opening on September 9th and running through November. Viewing times are once a week, each Monday, and tickets are known to sell out. Tickets go on sale the Tuesday before each time slot, so we recommend marking your calendar to secure a spot.
Grace Light is the work of artist George Zisiadis, who specializes in large-scale, site-specific installations. Based in Berkeley, he has worked on projects throughout the Bay Area and beyond, including the Civic Center Playground and many more across the United States. The music accompanying the light installation is the work of Gabriel Gold, who was once an Artist in Residence at Grace Cathedral. Gold is a composer and mixed-media artist with work shown around the world, including the de Young right here in San Francisco.
The project is in collaboration with Illuminate, an arts nonprofit based in San Francisco that focuses on creating large-scale public installations. Many of their well-known pieces are light installations, such as the Bay Bridge Lights and the massive Laser Pride flag from this June.
