If you’re traveling down California’s Central Coast anytime soon, consider this your heads-up that the 101 freeway has closed lanes through Buellton due to construction.
Caltrans reduced the 4-lane freeway down to a single lane in each direction through the small town, starting on June 8, 2026, and lasting through March 2027.
The closure starts just north of Avenue of Flags and Damassa Road, continuing nearly 4 miles down to the Nojoqui Creek Bridge. Motorists are advised to plan for possible delays of up to 10 minutes through this section of the 101.
Santa Rosa Road‘s northbound and southbound ramps, as well as Damassa Rd‘s northbound off-ramp, will also close for approximately three months. Traffic will detour through the Highway 246 ramps in the meantime.
The closures are part of a $29.8 million project to overhaul a 10-mile section of US 101. Work involves reconstructing shoulders, replacing concrete pavement, overlaying existing asphalt, reconstructing ramps, repairing drainage, upgrading electrical systems, and installing new guardrails.
