It’s officially spring, which means California has started to bloom with colorful flowers. One of the best places to see spring flowers in the Bay Area is a historic garden and estate — and it’s completely free to visit.
Gamble Garden is nestled in Old Palo Alto, surrounded by other historic homes. The gardens are open to the public every day during daylight hours, allowing guests to explore the manicured gardens bursting with various flowers. The garden is just a 40-minute drive from San Francisco and is the perfect spring escape.

Spring is one of the best times to visit the garden, when you can expect plenty of beautiful blooms throughout. The estate also hosts events regularly, including guided tours, lessons on gardening, and more. Upcoming events include a Gardeners’ Hour, where garden enthusiasts can gather to discuss their gardens, an introduction to vegetable gardening class, and more.
History of Gamble Garden

The house was originally built over 100 years ago in 1902, and the formal gardens were designed a few years later in 1908. Over time, small buildings and structures were added to the property, including a tea house and gazebo.
The estate was home to the Gamble family, comprised of four children, including Elizabeth F. Gamble, the garden’s namesake. Elizabeth moved away from home for college, but after returning to Palo Alto, she soon rediscovered her passion for gardening.
Her impressive garden featured roses and irises, and she was known for sharing her flowers with the community. In 1981, Elizabeth Gamble left the property to the city of Palo Alto, and 4 years later, with the help of a private garden club, the house was turned into a public garden.
The Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden is located at 1431 Waverley Street in Palo Alto and is open daily. We recommend checking their event schedule before heading to the garden.
