San Francisco’s spot on the California coast gives us great access to some spectacular beach destinations, but Johnson’s Beach in Guerneville stands out as the ultimate riverside destination.
For over a century, visitors have spent the summer on the pebbly shores of the Russian River, enjoying a unique beach day beneath the redwoods and sycamore trees. And starting this weekend, Johnson’s Beach will reopen for the summer swim season.
From the area’s charming vintage styling to its historic, rentable bungalows, here’s how to make the most of this retro resort 1.5 hours from San Francisco.
Johnson’s Beach
Eager summer vacationers can enjoy swim season at Johnson’s Beach starting this Saturday, May 16th. According to a recent Instagram post, the 2026 swim season is as follows.
- Open on weekends only in May, starting May 16
- Open daily from June 1 to September 27
Johnson’s Beach has been a popular swimming spot on the Russian River for decades. This part of the river is generally calm with little current, so visitors can lounge in inner tubes or go for a relaxing swim as if it were a lake. There’s also a roped-off, shallow kiddie pool area for families, although pets are not allowed.
The beach is outfitted with simple pleasures, including a snack bar with beer and wine, and gear rental for canoes, kayaks, inner tubes, beach chairs, and umbrellas.
The parking lot is open from 10am to 6pm.
Lodging and activities around Johnson’s Beach
As if this laid-back riverside beach weren’t charming enough, the area also provides ample lodging throughout the summer season that taps into that vintage nostalgia. Consider booking one of the historic bungalows built in the 1920s, each of which has a private deck and local art decorating the walls. Other options include adorable tiny cabins with fire pits, modest canvas cabanas, a rustic beach lodge, and cozy campsites.
The small town of Guerneville also offers numerous activities to round out your weekend, from hiking and ziplining at the 805-acre Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, to wine tasting at Korbel Champagne Cellars and Porter-Bass Winery.
