We’re lucky to enjoy some unbelievably scenic beaches within driving distance of San Francisco, from Ocean Beach with its dramatic sunset views to Kirby Cove right across the Bay. But what if we told you that the coolest nearby beach isn’t actually on the coast at all? Enter Johnson’s Beach, a summer haunt on the Russian River in the small town of Guerneville. For over a century, visitors have flocked to its pebbly shores to float in the river, take in the verdant forest views, and stay the night in tiny historic bungalows.
In 1918, Gertie and Ernie Johnson began developing the riverside resort into the ultimate rustic vacation destination. The beach is about a 90-minute drive from San Francisco and outfitted with simple pleasures including a kiddie pond; a snack bar with beer and wine; and gear rental for canoes, kayaks, inner tubes, beach chairs, and umbrellas.
Perhaps the best part about Johnson’s Beach is the ample lodging available between April and November. You can still rent the bungalows built in the 1920s, each of which has its own private deck and a ton of local art decorating the walls. Other options include adorable tiny cabins with fire pits, modest canvas cabanas, a beach lodge, and cozy campsites.
You can pack a weekend trip to the small town of Guerneville with numerous charming activities along the Russian River, which is a popular kayaking and canoeing destination. Explore the 805-acre Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, where you’ll find nice hiking trails and a zipline, or taste delicious Sonoma County wines at nearby tasting rooms including Korbel Champagne Cellars and Porter-Bass Winery.
