This week, San Franciscans can expect to see a beautiful moon rise over the city. The moon, often called the Cold Moon, is the last supermoon of 2025. While the largest and brightest supermoon of 2025 has already passed, the Cold Moon will still be a beautiful last full moon of the year.
When is the next supermoon?
You can expect to see the next supermoon on December 4th, 2025, and the moon will be completely full starting at 3:14 pm.

What is a supermoon?
A supermoon is when a full moon is at its closest to the Earth during its orbit. When the moon is closer, it will appear larger and brighter, leading to the unofficial term supermoon. In 2025, there were three supermoons, starting in October, and you can expect three to four supermoons every year.
When is the first supermoon in 2026?
The first supermoon of 2026 is at the very start of the year, on January 3, 2026. Following the first supermoon, the next will fall on November 24, 2026, and December 23, 2026.
Where are the best spots to see the moon in San Francisco?

While the right vantage point is essential for stargazing, of course, you can only see the moon on a clear night. Thankfully, the forecast for Thursday night in San Francisco shows clear skies. Check out some of our favorite stargazing spots here:
- Alamo Square Park: The park is well known for the iconic Painted Ladies, but it also has a great view of the city. Plus, it has plenty of space to sit on the lawn or park benches to look up at the sky.
- Twin Peaks: Twin Peaks is one of the most popular lookouts in the city, with sweeping views of SF and the water.
- Ina Coolbrith Park: This small park is the perfect secluded spot to enjoy some stargazing.
