We’ve been treated to plenty of beautiful celestial events over the past few months, including three spectacular supermoons. Now, the last supermoon of the year is almost upon us. On this Friday, November 15, look towards the sky to see the supermoon in all its glory.
The last of four consecutive supermoons will rise starting at 4:29 pm EST on Friday, November 15th. So, if you’re planning on doing some stargazing, this Friday night is the time to do it to catch the full moon in all its glory.
What is a supermoon?
While the term “supermoon” isn’t an official scientific term, it describes when a moon is full at it’s closest point to earth in its orbit. Fittingly, the term supermoon was coined because the moon looks larger and brighter due to it’s close proximity to the earth relative to other times of the year. Supermoons typically look 30% brighter and 14% larger, which results in a dazzling moon. The moon will appear full for roughly three days around Friday, so you have a couple chances to catch a glimpse this weekend.
Plus, late at night on the 15th into the morning hours of the 16th, a star cluster will be visible near the full moon. NASA recommends using binoculars to best see the Pleiades star cluster.
Where to see the supermoon in SF
If you want to see the dazzling full moon paired with a beautiful view, SF has plenty of great options. Some great viewpoints in the city include Twin Peaks, with sweeping views of the city and Corona Heights Park with beautiful views but a much shorter walk. We also recommend checking out one of the city’s many beautiful parks, including Alamo Square, Ina Coolbrith Park and Alta Plaza as great spots to do some peaceful stargazing.
