The Marina is one of San Francisco’s most popular neighborhoods, well known for its many bars and beautiful waterfront. The Marina Green is a long, scenic lawn, frequented by joggers and people taking in the view. The area is the oldest recreational marina in San Francisco, and it was last expanded over 50 years ago.
While the waterfront is already a bustling destination, San Francisco Recreation and Parks plans to make some notable changes to the area. Called the Marina Improvement and Remediation Project, it will notably feature major updates to one of the little-utilized lawns in the area. Just last week, the plan recently marked a major milestone; the concept designs for the updates were unanimously approved.
The changes would include many amenities for San Franciscans looking to enjoy the waterfront park, including a community dock with a kayak launch. Other additions are a widened shoreline and improved bay trail, a terrace, plaza, and even volleyball courts. Picnic tables and other furniture are also included in the plans, along with plants and improvements to the lawn.
Many of the additions to the waterfront will be on the triangular lawn between The Marina Green and Fort Mason. The space is called the Marina Triangle on plans for the project, and while the lawn is currently open to the public, it does not have many amenities.
The project also includes plans to address environmental factors, including restored shoreline protection and an additional breakwater.
SF Recreation and Parks estimates construction will start in 2027, and it will open to the public between 2028 and 2029. You can learn more about the Marina Improvement and Remediation Project here.
