Just three hours north of San Francisco sits a unique, stunning botanical garden that is perfect to visit this spring. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens are notable not just for the many blooming flowers, its unique location makes it a must-visit. The garden spans 47 acres and is perched on dramatic oceanfront bluffs. The result is a beautifully manicured garden that showcases Northern California’s iconic coastline.
The gardens are most known for the coastal trail portion, which loops along the bluffs and through a scenic coastal prairie. The garden has multiple sections, including areas for roses, succulents, dahlias, and more. Plus, look out for many Rhododendron sections as you enter the garden.

Spring through Fall, guests can grab a coffee and some food from Rhody’s Garden Café, a charming coffee shop near the entrance of the garden. If you feel inspired by all the spring blooms, you can also stop by the plant nursery, which offers a selection of plants that is similar to the botanical garden’s.

You can also plan your visit around one of the many events the botanical garden hosts throughout the year. You can join a guided nature walk, attend a yoga or mindfulness class, and more. This summer, the garden will host Art in the Gardens, which features over 50 artists, live music, drinks, and more.
The beautiful botanical garden started in 1961 and has since become a nonprofit organization. The Mendocino Coast Garden is located at 18220 CA-1, Fort Bragg, just off Highway 1. It is approximately a 3-hour drive from San Francisco, depending on traffic. You can learn more about the garden here.
