Up the coast from San Francisco sits a unique botanical garden spanning 47 acres, perched on dramatic oceanside bluffs. Mendocino Coast Garden is just off Highway 1 and features a stunning collection of flowers, including rhododendrons, dahlias, and conifers.
The garden has multiple sections, including areas for roses, succulents, dahlias, and more. We recommend stopping by the expansive rhododendron sections throughout the gardens before making your way to the coastal trail. The trail loops along the coastal bluffs that the garden is most known for, before turning back through a coastal prairie. Along with the numerous manicured portions of the garden, there’s also plenty of open lawn space that is often used to host events.

Weekly yoga classes happen every Sunday from 12 to 1 pm on the event lawn from May through September, along with weekly meditation sessions on Fridays. In the late fall, you can also join a Mushroom Walk with a naturalist who will guide you through the garden’s expansive varieties of wild mushrooms. Monthly bird watching is another popular event hosted by the garden, along with nature journaling and mosaic workshops.
During the spring and summer months, guests can get a snack from the garden cafe, which serves coffee, desserts, lunch items like soups and sandwiches, and even ice cream. The gardens also have a store selling souvenirs and gifts, and a nursery for those with a green thumb. Starting this weekend, September 13, you can check out a fall plant sale at the nursery.

The beautiful botanical garden started in 1961 and has since become a nonprofit organization. The Mendocino Coast Garden is located at 18220 CA-1, Fort Bragg, just off Highway 1. It is approximately a 3-hour drive from San Francisco. You can learn more about the garden here.
