
Martin Luther King Jr Day is this Monday, January 20th. The day honors the life and legacy of the incredible activist Martin Luther King Jr., whose impact is still with us today. There are many ways to honor Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend, from going to his memorial at the SF Embarcadero to volunteering. The third weekend of January is called the “MLK Weekend of Service” in honor of the iconic activist. Check out some ways you can get involved in the community this weekend in the Bay Area below.
Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy
The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is hosting multiple volunteer opportunities throughout the weekend. You can join various projects, including tending to the Presidio, weeding at Crissy Field, and more. You can see the full list of online opportunities for volunteers this weekend.
Day of Service with East Bay Parks
The East Bay Park Regional Parks District is hosting a Day of Service on Monday, January 20th. You can volunteer to clean up the Oakport Staging Area or Tidewater Boating Center, both of which welcome walk-ins.
NorCal MLK March
In honor of the key marches that took place during the Civil Rights Movement, a commemorative march and parade will take place on Monday, January 20. The march will start at SF’s Caltrain Station and end at Yerba Buena Gardens. The march begins at 11 am, but participants are encouraged to arrive early. After, you can attend the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival from 12 to 3:30 pm featuring live performances.
In The Black Community Day and Story Telling
In the Black is a marketplace for Black entrepreneurs. The marketplace will be hosting a community day and storytelling time on Saturday, January 18th, to honor Martin Luther King Jr. The day will include sales, educational materials for kids, and more. The event will take place at the In the Black Shop at 1567 Fillmore St from 12:30 to 4:30 pm.
