With summer in full swing, it’s easy to reminisce about classic amusement parks with the warm weather making the perfect opportunity to enjoy rollercoasters and other classic rides. Luckily for San Franciscans, the oldest amusement park in California is just a short drive from the city, and it happens to feature scenic waterfront views.
The Santa Cruz boardwalk was built in 1907, making it the oldest amusement park in the state after over 100 years in operation. It also happens to be one of the oldest waterfront amusement parks in the United States. The history of the boardwalk started in 1865 when tourists first started frequenting the area to visit a public bathhouse. Soon, more bathhouses opened, and eventually, restaurants and shops opened as tourists continued to flock to the area.
By the early 20th century, Fred W. Swanton set out to create the amusement park, drawing inspiration from Coney Island. One of the most iconic attractions of the boardwalk is the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, which just celebrated its 100th anniversary. Another iconic attraction is the Ferris wheel, first introduced to the park in 1925. Since then, the Ferris wheel has undergone several iterations until its most recent installment, the Dream Wheel.
Stocked with other historic attractions, the Looff Carousel was installed in 1911 and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. The merry-go-round is hand-carved and is the boardwalk’s oldest ride. It was carved by famous woodcarver Charles I.D. Looff, who was also responsible for Coney Island’s carousel. Music for the carousel is played by an 1894 band organ, which has been part of the ride since it opened over 100 years ago.
Today, the amusement park is still thriving, drawing tourists and locals alike to enjoy the historic rides and seaside charm. The park is free for the public to enter, so you can easily check out the iconic waterfront views and explore the rides. The boardwalk is stocked with restaurants, rides, laser tag, mini golf, and much more. You can check out a nautical-themed entertainment schedule, go bowling, and check out a casino arcade, all on the boardwalk. The park has plenty of modern rides besides just the iconic Giant Dipper, with family and kid-friendly rides also available.
During the summer, the amusement park offers plenty of free programming, including weekend movie nights, live music, acrobats, and magicians. Plus, there are plenty of deals offered, making it well worth the trip.
