Major changes are coming to the San Francisco waterfront as the city officially approves a $40 million recreation overhaul for a massive 5-acre park
The ambitious redesign will combine Embarcadero Plaza and Sue Bierman Park, creating a brand-new downtown hub featuring open performance spaces, sprawling central lawns, and more.
Major changes are coming to the San Francisco waterfront, as the final concept plans for a new 5-acre waterfront park have been approved by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission.
A $40 million new waterfront Park
The new waterfront park combines Embarcadero Plaza and Sue Bierman Park into a reimagined waterfront park. The project is estimated to cost $40 million and is a collaboration between private and public funding sources and organizations.
“We envision a waterfront park that is alive from morning to night, where office workers eat lunch in the sun, families play after visiting the Ferry Building, residents attend fitness classes and visitors experience the beauty and energy of San Francisco for the first time,” said Sarah Madland, General Manager of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department. “This design transforms the space into a beautiful and welcoming introduction to San Francisco, creating room for concerts and festivals, culture and recreation, community gatherings, and everyday fun.”

The new, cohesive waterfront park will feature a large central lawn, performance spaces, areas for recreational activities, and dog-friendly spaces. Sam Franciscans can also expect spaces for markets, festivals, and other public programming. The plan includes clear pathways, seating areas, and gardens throughout the lawn space. Finally, the park will include spaces for dining areas and shopping to create a cohesive park.
Funding for the project was secured from several sources, including $20 million from private support and 18 million in public funding sources. The San Francisco Recreation and Parks will operate the park once it’s completed, and the Downtown SF Partnership will run the public programming in the park. The Downtown SF Partnership is involved in various popular events, including the free block parties of Downtown First Thursdays.
