Point Bonita Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse known for its beautiful views, which frequently draw tourists to the Marin Headlands. Unfortunately, the lighthouse will be closed in the foreseeable future due to repairs to the suspension bridge and site.
The National Park Service announced the closures and repairs but has not announced a reopening date. While it may be disappointing not to be able to explore the historic lighthouse for the time being, the trail to the site is still open during normal business hours. Visitors will be unable to cross the suspension bridge until further notice, but you can still see views of the iconic lighthouse while maintenance is underway.
The half-mile trail to the site is still open to visitors up until the bridge. While the trail is short, it does have some steep areas and is made of loose gravel. This isn’t the first time the site has been closed for repairs. In 2010, the suspension bridge had to be replaced, and the site was reopened to the public in 2012.
About Point Bonita Light House
Located in the Marin Headlands near Sausalito, the lighthouse was originally built in 1855 and was one of the first lighthouses on the West Coast. It still serves as an active lighthouse operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. Up until 1940, the lighthouse could be reached by a trail, but erosion led to the iconic suspension bridge we know today. The lighthouse is known for both its history and the rugged cliffs it’s perched on.
The Point Bonita Lighthouse trail will remain open for typical operating hours, which run from 12:30 to 3:30 pm on Monday, Thursday, and Friday, and 10:30 am to 3:30 pm on weekends. Stay tuned for more updates about the repairs and when the historic site will reopen. You can also check the National Park Service website for more information and alerts.
