San Francisco is known for being a healthy city, with many residents partaking in active hobbies such as running, biking, and climbing. A recent study evaluating major cities in the United States has ranked San Francisco as the healthiest city in the country. The study, done by WalletHub, evaluated over 180 cities in the United States, and San Francisco earned the top score.
The West Coast is well represented in the top 10, with San Diego ranked second and Seattle ranked third. Portland, Oregon, was also ranked 5th overall.
The study evaluated cities on four dimensions: 1) Health Care, 2) Food, 3) Fitness, and 4) Green Space. Across those four dimensions are numerous metrics, including family doctors per capita, farmers’ markets per capita, average cost of gym memberships, hiking trails per capita, and many more. From there, the metrics are assigned weights and totaled to determine the final scores. San Francisco’s overall score came out to 70.41.

San Francisco ranked first in the food and green space categories. Notably, SF ranked fourth in healthy restaurants per capita and has the second-lowest obesity rate. The study also notes that 100% of the population in SF lives “reasonably close” to a space to do physical activity. Plus, San Francisco has one of the best availabilities of vegetarian and gluten-free options per capita.
