We’re truly in the middle of SF summer, with a heat wave taking over the city this week. The high temperatures start today, Monday, September 30. A high of 94 is expected for tomorrow, October 1 and highs of 90 are expected through Wednesday, with a slight break in the heat on Thursday with a drop to 85 degrees.
Due to the unusually high temperatures, the National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for parts of the Bay and a Heat Advisory in some areas. Temperatures in the East Bay are expected to be particularly hot, with coastal areas in the city slightly cooler than usual. Inland temperatures could reach as high as 108, with coastal areas over 10 degrees cooler.
The Excessive Heat Warning will last until 11 pm on Wednesday night. The NWS recommends avoiding outdoor activities to stay cool, staying hydrated, and taking cooling breaks during the heat wave. Leaving people or pets in any parked cars is also highly discouraged by the NWS during high temperatures.
By Friday the temperature will cool to a high of 80 (which is still pretty rare for SF weather), and temperatures in the high 70s by Sunday. Luckily, the nights will be cooler, with lows of 60 giving you the chance to cool off over night.
It’s not unusual for SF to see warm weather and sun in the fall, which has been deemed “SF summer.” While our summers are typically foggy and cold, San Franciscans have become accustomed to delayed summer weather. So, while you might be getting in the fall mood, the heat wave has other days. This isn’t the first heat wave in the Bay Area in the past few months, but it’s some of the highest predicted temperatures for the city this year.
