Lookalike contests are a recent phenomenon sweeping major cities, thanks to social media. People have swarmed to the lookalike contests of famous actors, including Timothée Chalamet and Jeremy Allen White.
San Francisco is ahead of the lookalike trend, with a longstanding tradition of hosting a Hunky Jesus Contest every Easter in Dolores Park. The iconic Easter event in San Francisco is just as it sounds: people enter a contest in their best hunky Jesus interpretation, with a major crowd cheering them on. The contestants often have props (such as a giant disco bull one contest winner rode), and the costumes vary in interpretations. The contest is returning for another year, scheduled for Sunday, April 5.

The Hunky Jesus Contest is just one part of Sisters Easter, the annual celebration in Dolores hosted by the local nonprofit Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
This year’s celebration is themed “Love Thy Neighbor,” emphasizing a joyful community celebration. Sisters’ Easter In The Park will include multiple contests: Easter Bonnet, Foxy Mary, and Hunky Jesus. The event will be hosted by emcees Sister Roma, Peaches Christ, and Honey Mahogany, and will include live performances from drag queens and other artists.
The celebration starts at 10 am and runs until 4 pm at Dolores Park. The morning will feature a family-friendly Children’s Easter festivities, with a wholesome egg hunt. While the event does not allow nudity or profanity, organizers note that the afternoon portion of the day is adult-oriented and may not be the best for children. The lookalike contests will start at 12 pm, with the Hunky Jesus contest scheduled last.
About the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence
The now-iconic charity began on Easter Sunday in 1979, when the founders put on donated habits and walked through the city. Now, the non-profit organization of queer and trans nuns regularly hosts community events and volunteers in San Francisco. The Easter celebration in Dolores Park is one of their largest events, with 10,000 attendees.
