Muni recently announced service changes that took effect on Saturday, August 29, to address crowded transit. The changes are based on feedback from riders and operators and are intended to make service smoother and more efficient. Here’s what to know.
Muni Service Changes 2026
Notable changes to Muni Services include more frequent service for some lines and larger buses. Muni buses on 1 California will have more frequent service, arriving every 9 minutes. The N Judah will also arrive every 9 minutes during peak hours, as opposed to every 10 minutes.
5R Fulton Rapid will use only 60-foot buses and run every 10 minutes, allowing for more space to ease crowding on the route. The 22 Fillmore and 29 Sunset will also have added capacity on buses, and 8R Geary Rapid and 49 Van Ness-Mission will have more capacity during peak hours.
Other changes also include making the 22 Owl, the late-night bus service, more reliable. The schedule has been adjusted to better align with travel times, and service can be expected every 30 minutes.
The changes aim to better accommodate riders with shorter wait times and more room on busy routes. SFMTA is unable to increase service across the board due to the budget deficit, and the current changes are cost-neutral.
