SFMOMA regularly hosts exciting education events, from film screenings to artist talks. The modern art museum is a staple in the San Francisco art scene, frequently showcasing major artists in its galleries.
Recently, the museum has been partnering with a beloved arts nonprofit, SCRAP, to host weekly art workshops in the museum. The workshop series, called MAKE!, is every Sunday, and there are only a few more events on the schedule. The workshops are drop-in style and led by educators from SCRAP, which is a local nonprofit that sells recycled art supplies at affordable prices.
SCRAP has a large store in Bayview filled with recycled materials for creative projects. The nonprofit was founded in 1976 and has since had a major impact on artists in San Francisco, working to make art more accessible and frequently hosting educational workshops for the community.
The workshops use supplies from SCRAP’s inventory, and each workshop will have a different focus. The events will run until December 21, so you have a few weekends to create something. Each workshop is open from 10 am to 1 pm on Sundays.
Check out the schedule below:
- November 23: Watercolor Muslins
- December 7: Alejandro Cartagena Transportation Drawings
- December 14: Watercolor Muslins + Second Sunday
- December 21: Character Design
The workshops are free and open to the public; you do not need a museum ticket to participate. You can find the workshops in the Education Center on the second floor, which is part of the museum that is open to the public. SFMOMA has 45,000 square feet of free exhibit space to explore, so you can still experience a wide range of art without a museum ticket.
While you’re at the museum, we recommend exploring some of the many exhibitions, including the newest addition, KAWS: FAMILY, which just opened on November 15.
You can find more details about the workshops here.
