San Francisco International Airport (SFO) announced last month that it will close Runway 1 in order to repave it and make improvements. The runway will be closed from March 30th until October 2, 2026.
The closure could result in some temporary delays at SFO during peak periods. Here’s a closer look.
What to expect during the 6-month runway closure
SFO has a four-runway configuration with two intersecting pairs of runways.
For 6 months between March and October, both the runway under construction (runway 1 Right) and its parallel runway (runway 1 Left) will close for takeoffs and landings.
During this time, 1 Right will get a newly-repaved surface layer, improved taxiways, upgraded lighting, and new striping. 1 Left will be used as an additional taxiway to reduce congestion on the tarmac.

SFO will operate arrivals and departures exclusively on runways 28 Left and 28 Right. This configuration is not unusual, as it is often used on clear windy days.
As for the effect on passengers, SFO anticipates that less than 10% of flights will be delayed due to the temporary runway configuration. Delays will likely average less than 30 minutes during peak periods around 9am and 8-9pm.
More changes at SFO
San Francisco International Airport is working on a large multi-year remodel with various parts in different phases.
Terminal 3 West modernization: Parts of Terminal 3 are partially closed as SFO adds another 200,000 square feet of space, including a revamped exterior facade, expanded check-in areas, a next-gen self-bag drop, and new security checkpoints.
Harvey Milk Terminal 1: Terminal 1 opened in 2024 after a major remodel with modernized facilities. It recently won UNESCO’s prestigious Prix Versailles architecture and design award as the “World’s Most Beautiful Airport.”
Work also continues on the International Terminal Building and Courtyard 3/4, where crews are adding connectors to improve passenger flows between terminals and customs.
