San Francisco International Airport (SFO) just announced a major new program that will let you join loved ones at the gate without a plane ticket — something that typically hasn’t been allowed in SFO (and many other airports) for years.
The new program is called the Gate Explorer Program, which issues a pass for non-flyers to get past security to walk or meet their friends and family at the gate. Guests will also be able to try any of the restaurants and amenities beyond security, such as the lounges or educational exhibitions.
How to get a Gate Explorer Pass

Applications for the post-security pass can be submitted online, up to 30 days in advance. Same-day applications are also accepted, and you will be notified via email after midnight the day of the flight that status of your application.
The application asks for your full name that appears on your TSA-approved ID (such as a Real ID or passport), your date of birth, and your email address. If your application is approved, when you arrive at the airport, you will pass through typical security screenings, and you will need identification along with a digital or printed copy of the Gate Explorer Pass.
Minors may also apply if accompanied by an adult for the duration of their visit. Pass holders can bring a single item through security, such as a purse or briefcase.
People without a plane ticket have not been allowed past TSA in decades, so the new program is a notable change. SFO notes that the program may be changed or canceled at any time based on security requirements, so it may not be a permanent addition.
