On Thursday, Saturday Night Live released a previously unseen sketch from January 22’s episode featuring Will Forte. It involves a presentation of ideas using President Biden’s infrastructure bill to revamp San Francsico for the future.
The sketch begins at SF City Hall with 2 entrepreneurs (Kyle Mooney and Heidi Gardner) pitching an idea for a five-star resort and casino on Alcatraz Island. A group of government officials (Chris Redd, Ego Nwodim, James Austin Johnson) loves the idea, but their conversation is quickly interrupted by a group of rockers with a different proposal for San Francisco’s future. You can watch the sketch here:
The group (Will Forte, Kate McKinnon, Bowen Yang, Kristen Wiig) propose a new city design built on rock and roll, taking Starship’s 1985 hit “We Built This City” literally. The group regales us with several renditions of the song itself, featuring enthusiastic adlibs from Forte.
Their model for San Francisco “6 months from now” features giant guitars, a huge hot dog, and flickering lasers surrounded by roller coasters meant for transporting people to Mars. The group goes back-and-forth with the government committee, sprinkling in some very San Francisco insults such as “Your trolleys are stupid, they make you look like a child.” The sketch ends with the rockers playing themselves off with a parody of Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now.” You can watch the sketch here.
Saturday Night Live will be back on February 26, with John Mulaney as host and LCD Soundsystem as musical guest!
