San Francisco isn’t typically known for hosting a Fourth of July Parade; instead, the fireworks show usually is the main event (assuming the fog doesn’t obscure the view). Last year, though, organizers decided to create a small, family-friendly parade on the Great Highway for the Fourth of July. The debut parade didn’t take place on the actual holiday, as the road was only closed to traffic on weekends at that point; it was instead scheduled a few days early.
For 2025, organizers have decided to revive the parade, this time at the newly updated Sunset Dunes park, on July 4th. The community parade will feature anyone who wants to join in, including families with kids, strollers, and pets. A marching band, firetrucks, and more will kick off the parade starting at Noriega Street, making its way down the Great Highway until Irving Street.
The festivities will start at noon on July 4th and run until 2:00 p.m. Once the parade is over, you can enjoy the new park, complete with lounge spaces, a skating area, and many beautiful art installations. Plus, you can take the views at Ocean Beach while you’re there.
The newly created park, called Sunset Dunes, was confirmed last November, when San Franciscans voted on a proposition that would close a portion of the Great Highway to make it a park. Previously, a stretch of the road was closed on weekends, allowing for joggers, bikers, and more to enjoy the area. Since becoming a permanent park, new amenities have been added, including seating, art installations, and more.
There are plenty of wonderful local businesses near the new park, including a beer and wine bar, Woods, a beloved seafood spot, Hook Fish, and many more.
