According to a new ranking by culinary blog Chef Standards, Sausalito’s Sushi Ran has the best sushi in the state of California. The twelve-seat Omakase bar serves an 18-course, $185 prix fixe menu, which caught the attention of Chef Standards for being a “sensory journey that leaves a lasting impression.”
What’s on the menu at Sushi Ran?
Sushi Ran offers two prix-fixe menus: An 18-course omakase for $185, and a 13-course omakase for $140. The 18-course menu begins with two starters, including sunomono, or Japanese cucumber salad, and chawanmushi, a steamed egg custard with chicken and shrimp. Then comes a delicate lineup of 13 types of sushi, ranging from kinmedai, a lightly smoked golden eye snapper, to toro taku temaki, or tuna belly and pickled radish.
These sushi offerings are interspersed with small plates of snow crab and fried mackerel, and it all rounds out with pecan mochi cake and gelato for dessert.
If you’re opting for the 13-course menu, it includes one starter, one small plate, dessert, and a reduced selection of sushi.
While these omakase offerings are no doubt the main event at Sushi Ran, the esteemed restaurant also offers elaborate sushi boxes for takeout and an à la carte menu with dozens more options.
Sushi Ran has been honored in numerous studies and rankings, earning a 2022 Michelin California Bib Gourmand designation.
