Following in the footsteps of Google Wallet, Apple has announced a new digital passport feature that will be available with this fall’s new iOS 26 rollout. TSA has approved the Digital ID, which can be added to your iPhone’s Apple Wallet, for use on domestic U.S. flights. That said, the Digital ID will not be accepted for international flights, and they recommend still having your physical U.S. Passport available just in case it’s needed.
When will iPhone’s Digital ID be available?
Apple has announced that iOS 26 will be available “this fall,” which some tech sites are interpreting to mean mid-September based on previous iOS update launches.
Apple Wallet’s Digital ID feature will be available for passports just like it is for driver’s licenses in certain states (including California). The process involves scanning your physical ID with your phone’s camera and completing a facial recognition step. In addition to helping with travel, you can use your digital ID to verify your identity online without having to upload sensitive documents to websites.
What should I know about using Digital ID at the airport?
While iPhone’s Digital ID for passports may be another convenient option to get through security, it is not a replacement for your physical passport. TSA has approved its use for domestic travel, but they recommend you still bring your physical passport as a backup. For international travel and border crossings, you will also still need your physical passport.
And yes, the digital passport can be used as a Real ID alternative for domestic flights, giving users another way to comply with the recent Real ID rollout. iOS 26 also comes with new Apple Wallet features like live flight updates, airport terminal maps, and integration with Find My for those who are tracking AirTagged luggage.
