Wilder Ranch State Park is a 7,000-acre ranch from the late 19th century, now converted into a museum and nature preserve. It’s one of those lesser-known coastal areas in California that is revered by locals, best experienced via a peaceful bluffside stroll or a scenic bike ride. From 19th-century ranch buildings to otherworldly sea caves, here are some of Wilder Ranch’s most interesting sights.
History of Wilder Ranch
Originally inhabited by the Ohlone people for centuries, the Wilder Ranch area saw dramatic change following the 1776 Spanish expedition led by Gaspar de Portolá and the arrival of Mission Santa Cruz. The Spanish introduced cattle grazing to the region, depleting native food sources and bringing diseases that devastated the Ohlone population.
As the native community declined, the Spanish claimed the land as Rancho Arroyo del Matadero, using it for cattle ranching and slaughter into the 1830s. The property changed ownership multiple times until it was acquired by the Wilder family, who ran a creamery and operated the ranch for more than 100 years.
In the 1970s, plans to develop the land were halted when Santa Cruz residents voted to preserve it as a protected natural area. As a result, Wilder Ranch has been largely spared from modern construction, making it one of California’s pristine stretches of undeveloped coastline.
Visiting Wilder Ranch
Today, visitors can still visit the 19th-century dairy ranch, a 1897 Victorian home, an 1859 Gothic Revival farmhouse, and a 1896 water-powered machine shop. You can explore these elements on 1-hour weekend tours, where docents often dress in period clothing.
Wilder Ranch offers a variety of hiking trails to explore. For coastal scenery, the Old Landing Cove Trail, Pacific to Redwoods Loop, and Wilder Ridge trails provide stunning views of crashing waves and lead to secluded beaches.
Don’t miss the chance to venture down to Fern Grotto Beach, where you’ll discover impressive sea caves that make for fantastic photo ops. If you prefer inland landscapes, the Englesman, Long Meadow, Eucalyptus, and Enchanted Loop trails showcase the area’s rolling green hills framed by sweeping ocean vistas.
Keep an eye out for native wildlife, including harbor seals playing in the water or basking on the beach. Other animals include egrets, pelicans, gulls, newts, and snakes. The cliffs are great places to look for whales, so watch the water and see if you can catch them spouting. Guests are also known to go tidepooling around Wilder Ranch, in search of sea anemones, starfish, hermit crabs, and other interesting critters.
