The 2026 San Francisco Marathon will cause major road closures across the city on Sunday, July 26, 2026. Drivers, riders, and residents should plan ahead for early-morning start times, rolling closures, and Muni delays.
The first wave of full marathon runners starts at 5:15 a.m. from Mission Street and The Embarcadero. The course moves through multiple neighborhoods including the Financial District, Marina, Presidio, Outer Richmond, Golden Gate Park, Haight Ashbury, Mission and Potrero Hill, eventually ending back where it started on the Embarcadero. Many affected streets will close for several hours and then reopen as runners clear each segment.
Numerous Muni routes will be rerouted or delayed, with stops in affected areas temporarily missed. SFMTA recommends that transit riders check real-time alerts or contact 311 for alternate stop information.

Race weekend road closures
The biggest impacts will center on The Embarcadero and connecting streets downtown, then extend west into the Marina, Richmond, Golden Gate Park, the Haight and Mission as runners move along the course.
Financial District & Fisherman’s Wharf
The Embarcadero corridor will see significant closures, with northbound Embarcadero/King Street shut between 3rd Street and Broadway and southbound Embarcadero closed from Broadway to Harrison (12:01 a.m.–3:00 p.m.).
In Fisherman’s Wharf, Jefferson Street between Powell and Hyde will be closed to vehicles whenever runners are present (5:00 a.m–10:30 a.m.).
Marina, Golden Gate Bridge, and Presidio
In the Marina District, westbound Bay Street, northbound Laguna Street from Bay to Marina Boulevard, and the westbound lanes of Marina Boulevard to Yacht Road will all be closed (5:00 a.m.–9:00 a.m.), with northbound traffic advised to detour via Van Ness Avenue.
Vehicle traffic will remain open in both directions across the Golden Gate Bridge. The east sidewalk reopens to bikes and pedestrians at 9:00 a.m., and the west sidewalk opens to bikes at 10:00 a.m.
In the Presidio and Golden Gate National Recreation Area, there will be no access to the bridge through the Presidio (4:30 a.m.–10:00 a.m.)
Old Mason Street and its connecting intersections from the Marina Gate to Crissy Field Avenue, plus Crissy Field Avenue itself, will be closed (4:30 a.m.–10:00 a.m.).
Richmond and Golden Gate Park
In the Richmond District, 26th and 27th Avenues will close close from Fulton to Lake to through traffic; cross traffic will be intermittently allowed on California, Clement, Geary, Balboa and Cabrillo.
Drivers moving north–south through Golden Gate Park are advised to use 19th Avenue/Park Presidio, but heavy delays are anticipated (6:00 a.m.–11:00 a.m.).
Haight & Market Street
In the Upper Haight, north–south crossings should use Kezar Drive connecting from Lincoln to Oak and Fell, but drivers should plan for substantial delays (6:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m.).
In the Lower Haight, Steiner and Fillmore will serve as the main north–south crossings, again with significant congestion expected (6:30 a.m.–11:45 a.m.).
On Market Street, both eastbound and westbound travel near Duboce Avenue and Guerrero Street will experience major delays, with access constrained from 6:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
Mission, Potrero Hill, and Dogpatch
In the Mission and Potrero areas around 15th, 16th and 17th Streets, northbound and southbound traffic should rely on Highway 280 or Highway 101 where possible; crossovers at city streets such as Valencia, South Van Ness, Folsom, Bryant and Potrero will remain but with long delays likely (6:45 a.m.–12:30 p.m.).
Third Street will be heavily impacted between Mariposa and 20th, with signed detours guiding southbound traffic via Mariposa, Tennessee, the 18th Street overpass, Pennsylvania and 20th/23rd back to Third; northbound traffic will be routed via 23rd/20th, Pennsylvania, 18th, Tennessee and Mariposa to reach Third Street (7:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.).
In the Oracle Park, Mission Rock and South Beach area, Terry Francois Boulevard will be closed during the race window (7:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.).
