A massive laser installation is coming to San Francisco’s Civic Center this weekend. The rainbow light installation will be on view in the Civic Center Plaza, inviting people to enjoy the installation and SF celebrates summer, Pride, the World Cup, and the Fourth of July.
The installation, titled 7X7, features 49 massive lasers in a rainbow of colors. The lasers will be arranged in a square grid, with the beams of light pointed directly to the sky. The 39 laser canons will be elevated 10 feet above the ground, allowing spectators to walk under the installation and immerse themselves in the towering rainbow. During Pride the lasers will create a rainbow, and for the Fourth of July you can expect festive red white and blue lasers.
7X7 is intended to be a celebratory and welcoming public art installation, as the Bay Area hosts World Cup games and celebrates Pride. The 7 by 7 grid was created to honor San Francisco’s dimensions (7 by 7 miles).
“With the Summer Solstice, Pride, six World Cup matches, San Francisco’s 250th and America’s 250th all in the span of two weeks, it’s an amazing stretch here in the city,” said Illuminate CEO Ben Davis. “We decided it warranted an epic installation, while the world is watching.”
The light display will be unveiled on June 21 and remain up until July 4. The project is the work of Illuminate, an SF arts nonprofit that regularly installs major public art displays throughout the city and hosts community events. Illuminate has helped bring some iconic installations to life, including The Bay Lights and the Golden Mile in Golden Gate Park.
