The California Academy of Sciences is well known for its expansive collections and many exhibits, including a planetarium, rainforest, and aquarium. The science museum recently announced plans to celebrate California’s biodiversity in September with a series of special events, including a film screening, nature festival, and more.
California Academy of Sciences biodiversity celebrations

San Franciscans can take advantage of various special events during the month to learn more about California’s biodiversity.
“California is one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth, with an extraordinary range of landscapes and ecosystems,” said Amber Mace, Interim Executive Director of the California Academy of Sciences. “For more than 170 years, the Academy has been documenting and deepening our understanding of California’s plants, animals, and ecosystems, and putting that knowledge to work to help conserve and regenerate the natural world. It is especially meaningful to welcome conservation leaders from across the state for the 30×30 Partnership Summit later this month, while also inviting our community to connect with California’s nature firsthand through hands-on community science and stunning visual storytelling.”
The events for this September kick off with free community science events on September 5 and 12 at Dimond Park in Oakland and Sunset Dunes, respectively. San Franciscans can also catch a screening of the museum’s new original film, Timescapes, which officially debuted on September 4. The movie details California’s natural past, exploring how people changed the area over time. The film will be screened in the Morrison Planetarium and is included in museum admission.
At the end of the month, the academy will host a nature festival in Golden Gate Park to celebrate the state’s biodiversity. The festival will take place in front of the academy on September 27 and will host local organizations, community leaders, and initiatives that work in nature conservation. The festival is free, and a wonderful chance to learn more about conservation efforts in the state.
