In the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, many major retailers closed stores in Downtown San Francisco. Among the closures were stores like Nordstrom, Anthropologie, and Uniqlo. Now, after closing in 2021, Uniqlo is officially returning to Downtown San Francisco, with a major new location set to open this fall.
Uniqlo in San Francisco

Japanese retailer Uniqlo is set to open a new store in Downtown San Francisco, with an opening date set for October 9, 2026, according to a post from SF Mayor Daniel Laurie. The new store is located at 4th and Market Street, in the center of the Financial District and just a short walk from Union Square. The store will take over a 20,315 square-foot space that was formerly occupied by Old Navy.
Uniqlo is known for its casual clothing, and it has become a massively popular retailer across the globe. The retailer first opened in 1984 and has over 2,500 stores worldwide. There is currently a Uniqlo inside Stonestown Galleria, a busy shopping mall located in the Southwestern portion of San Francisco. The new store location is within walking distance of many other retail stores, including Levi’s, Zara, and Macy’s.
Uniqlo joins several other recent openings, with the second Nintendo store in the United States opening in Union Square in 2025, and Zara announcing a new flagship store that is expected to open at the end of this year.
