Nintendo opened its second retail store in the United States, right here in San Francisco. The highly anticipated opening in Union Square had lines around the block when the store welcomed its first customers in May, and now, just a few weeks later, more fans lined up for the release of The Switch 2.
Due to the overwhelming interest in the new Switch, the SF Nintendo store implemented a drawing for fans to get their shopping sessions between June 17 and June 22. For fans who were able to score a shopping session, products are limited to one purchase per customer. The store has plenty of exclusive products, including the Switch in light yellow, special apparel, Mario-themed accessories, and more. Some notable items include the Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, and The Legend of Zelda collections.
The San Francisco Nintendo store is the second in the United States, with the only other Nintendo store located in New York City. The new Nintendo is located at 331 Powell St, on the corner of Union Square. Its neighbors include the Westin St. Francis and Macy’s, among other retailers in the area. The opening announcement comes as a welcome change, with many retailers leaving Downtown San Francisco. This includes Bloomingdale’s, The North Face, and eventually Macy’s in the coming years.
The Japanese company has a long history in the gaming industry, starting over 100 years ago in 1889 by manufacturing playing cards. Now, it has grown to become one of the most well-known gaming companies worldwide. The company’s franchises include Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, and Pokémon. Given its undeniable impact on popular culture, it’s exciting that San Francisco was chosen to open its newest retail destination.
The city and local retailers have made considerable efforts to help revive Downtown San Francisco in recent years, including free concerts from major headliners and numerous community events.
