The Golden Gate Bridge is an iconic landmark in San Francisco, a scenic symbol of the city known around the world. There are many spots in the city to see the bridge, but one beach in particular is the perfect hidden viewpoint, and the only way to get there is by hiking a short trail.
Batteries to Bluffs Trail

Located on the western shore of the city, Marshall’s Beach offers a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge. The only way to get to the beach is by hiking the Batteries to Bluffs Trail, and as a result, the beach is typically quiet.
The trail is only .7 miles total, winding through the seaside bluffs before descending down to the Beach. While the hike is in San Francisco, it feels deep in nature and is perfect for a quick escape. The trail includes 470 stairs and is considered a moderate hike. Some lucky hikers have even spotted dolphins or a grey whale. True to its name, the route also passes through historic batteries, built by the U.S. Army in the 20th century.

While they are no longer in use, they still remain in the now popular park, including Battery Bluff Park, which opened in 2022. Plenty of wildflowers bloom along the trail, and the bluffs down to the beach have blue-green serpentine. We recommend checking the tide when you plan to spend time on the beach, as much of the sandy shore disappears during high tide.
You can start from either end of the hike, but we recommend beginning at the trailhead near Golden Gate Overlook. Grab a coffee or snack at Equator Coffee before starting your hike. Then, if you continue past Marshall’s Beach, you can hike to Baker Beach for more views.
