Bay FC played a thrilling match against the Washington Spirit at Oracle Park last Saturday, and with 40,091 fans in attendance, it was the highest attendance for an NWSL match since the league’s inception in 2013.
The 40,091 fans on Saturday shattered the NWSL’s previous record of 35,038, set at a match last year between Bay FC and the Chicago Stars at Chicago’s Wrigley Field.
Bay FC’s home stadium, PayPal Park in San Jose, has a capacity of 18,000, and home games typically draw around 13,400, according to the SF Chronicle.
Although Bay FC lost to the Washington Spirit 3-2, the match’s popularity left things on a hopeful note. The Bay Area’s professional women’s soccer team has only been around for 2 years, but this record-breaking turnout has exciting implications for the success of women’s sports, both locally and beyond.
Only time will tell if Bay FC manages to move to its own larger home stadium one day.
