The Michelin Guide released its list of the latest restaurants in California that earned a coveted star, and one San Francisco restaurant was awarded its third star, the highest honor Michelin awards.
Californios earned its third Michelin star this June, not only adding it to the highly prestigious list of three Michelin Stars, but it is also the first Mexican restaurant in the world to achieve the honor. There are only 16 three-Michelin-star restaurants in the United States, four of which are in San Francisco.

Californios is led by Chef Val M. Cantú, and the Michelin guide notes he brings an “electric jolt of imagination and masterful technique” to the restaurant. Californios is noted for taking traditional Mexican flavors and dishes.
The restaurant opened in 2015 and quickly earned its first Michelin star that same year. Then, in 2018, Californios was awarded its second star. In 2020, the restaurant closed its Mission District location and reopened in a larger space in SoMa, where it remains today. The restaurant is highly praised by Michelin inspectors for many factors, including its boldness, use of spice, and thoughtful dishes. One Michelin inspector even called Californios “…the greatest Mexican restaurant in the world…”
The other three Michelin star restaurants in San Francisco include Atelier Crenn, Benus, and Quince. Just north of San Francisco in Yountville, The French Laundry is another iconic restaurant boasting three stars.
