Cambria, California is one of those rare Central Coast towns that still feels like a secret, especially if you’re used to the usual Bay Area getaways like Santa Cruz or Monterey. Just off Highway 1, it sits roughly halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, making it a natural pause point if you’re heading south for a longer trip.

A mellow coastal escape from SF
After a long drive from SF, Cambria is an ideal place to park the car and head to the beach to stretch your legs. Start at Moonstone Beach Boardwalk, a mile-long wooden path that hugs the bluffs and gives you big, sweeping views of the Pacific, especially pretty at sunrise and sunset. In migration season, this is also a good vantage point for spotting gray whales just offshore.
When you’re ready to move beyond the shoreline, wander into East and West Village, Cambria’s twin downtown areas filled with art galleries, antique stores, garden shops, and independent restaurants. This is where you can grab coffee at a cozy café, poke around for quirky home decor, and track down a slice of the area’s famous olallieberry pie at Linn’s.
If the ocean views are what you came for, there’s more than enough to keep you outside. Fiscalini Ranch Preserve offers cliff-top trails that wind through Monterey pines and along the shoreline, with wide-open views of the water almost the entire way.
And if you continue north toward San Simeon, you can add in the elephant seal rookery, the historic Piedras Blancas Light Station, and Hearst Castle—all easy side trips that fold neatly into a Cambria-focused weekend.
Planning your SF-to-Cambria route
Geographically, Cambria sits almost exactly between San Francisco and Los Angeles, about 3.5–4 hours from each city and roughly 220–230 miles in either direction. That makes it a natural midway point for a Highway 1 or 101 road trip.
