Canyon Market, the beloved community grocery store in SF’s Glen Park neighborhood has just been acquired by another like-minded family business, Gus’s Community Market.
In a recent Instagram post, Gus’s Market expressed warmth and admiration for Canyon Market founders, Janet and Richard Tarlov. “They have made Canyon Market a fixture in the Glen Park neighborhood for the last 16 years and we are honored to continue their legacy as an independent, family-run neighborhood grocery,” the post read.
Gus’s Community Market has operating community grocery stores across SF for the last 40 years. Started by Konstantinos “Gus” Vardakastanis and his father Dimitri, the company now has 4 locations in SF, with Canyon Market becoming their 5th. Gus tragically passed away in 2017 and the company is currently run by his sons Dimitri and Bobby Vardakastanis who have continued to grow the business.
Gus’s Market will officially take the reigns at Canyon Market on December 21st, maintaining its 90-person staff and store leadership.
Operations will continue as-is for the time being with Richard Tarlov telling SFGATE that eventually, Gus’s Community Market products and logs will appear throughout the store but that Canyon Market shelves will continue to be stocked with its own familiar products with the goal of making the transition “seamless for customers.”
Canyon Market is open daily from 7am until 8pm.
