The Castro Theaters is an iconic landmark in the neighborhood and the rest of the city. The historic theater closed in February 2024 for renovations, and it was recently announced that the theater will reopen in early 2026, by none other than singer-songwriter Sam Smith.
Sam Smith will have a 16-day residency at the theater, with many shows already sold out. The residency will start on February 10 and run through March 7, and four additional shows were recently added due to popular demand. Sam Smith is well known for their hit songs “Unholy,” “Too Good at Goodbyes,” and “Dancing with a Stranger,” among many others. If you’re interested in attending a show, we recommend securing tickets as soon as you can, and you can find ticket information here.
The theater was temporarily closed to make key renovations, including updating the sound, lighting, and other production elements. Local entertainment group Another Planet Entertainment started the 41 million-dollar renovation, and the grand reveal of the theater’s updates has been highly anticipated by the public.
“The Castro Theatre is an icon of the LGBTQ+ community, a treasured space for film, music and live performance and a wonderful building that we will upgrade for more use in the future,” says Gregg Perloff, Another Planet Entertainment, CEO and Co-Founder. “We want to activate and re-energize the building with that always in the forefront of our mind, making improvements to the customer and artist experience, including dressing room upgrades, restoring the marquee and blade and expanding food and beverage service. We want to present all sorts of programming in the theater – comedy, music, film, community and private events and more. We look forward to further contributing to the culture and economy of this vibrant and diverse neighborhood, and involving the community in our planning.”
The Castro Theater opened in 1922 and is over 100 years old. In 1976, it was declared a historical landmark and has since been a center for culture in the city.
